Literature Text

It had been a quiet night, thankfully I only had about an hour left on my shift.  I slipped my headset on and popped the flip top of my can of diet soda and opened my bag of cheddar and sour cream potato chips that I intended on eating with the peanut butter and jelly sandwich I had made for my lunch.  No sooner had I taken the first sip of my soda when the light flashed and the phones started ringing.  The night was about to get interesting.

"911, what is your emergency?"  I said, waiting for my computer to pull up the address and such for me to verify while I'm on the phone with whatever hysterical idiot had called me.   However, nothing could have prepared me for the words that came out of this individual's mouth.

"I'm stranded on my kitchen table." She said, and I think if I wasn't wearing a headset I would have dropped the phone and probably died of hysterical laughter.  However, I managed to keep myself composed as I responded.

"Why are you stranded on your kitchen table ma'am?" I asked motioning one of my coworkers to put on a headset.  "We've got a woman stranded on her kitchen table…anyone wanna listen in?" There was laughter from around the room while a few people connected into the call, keeping their own headsets on mute.

"T..there is a huge rat running around my kitchen and I am afraid to get down…it may have rabies…" She said into the phone and then whimpered pathetically.  "Oh.  My.  God.  It just ate my cat…Mister Fluffmeister…"

I motioned to one of the dispatchers to send a cop out and to have him call animal control as well.  This was gonna be messy.  "Ma'am.  There is an officer on the way, and animal control as well."  I said, and as soon as I realized the cop was there I hung up.  I thought it was all said and done, and thankfully it was the end of my shift twenty minutes after this woman called so I got to go home.

It shocked the hell out of me when I picked up the paper while drinking my morning cup of coffee when I read the front page headlines. "Manhattan's worst nightmare: Serial Killer Rats.  Your pets are no longer safe."
